Last year the inaugural Swansea Bay 7s was a roaring success and in 2009 we follow it up with a bigger and better competition! Following the record attendance and huge enthusiasm with which Varsity was supported this year, Swansea University is gearing up to embrace Rugby 7s on Tuesday 9th June 2008

The tournament has extended to two pitches at Sketty Lane meaning we can take up to 30 teams from men and women. With the tournament hoping to run a two tier tournament to provide a great day for the more social and more serious teams respectively.

The day-long event is open to teams from within university, alumni and other welsh institutions. Players of all abilities are welcome. There will be a barbecue, refreshments, music, DJs, raffle and give-aways so spectators are encouraged to come and support your friends. It’s a perfect excuse for a post-exam, pre-summer ball all-dayer with plenty of banter, sun and 7s.

Interest is significant but entries close on Monday 25th March, so be sure to get your team’s completed forms and entry fees in as soon as possible. Drop it up to Simon Griffin in the AU office in a sealed envelope marked “Rugby 7s”.

Inspired by our favourite league, the Irn-Bru Scottish Football League Third Division Championship, come the Irn-Bru Allstars.

Representing Xtreme Radio 1431 AM’s flag-ship sports show that is “The Dugout”, the Allstars are an amalgamation of some of Britain’s finest untapped rugby talent (and Lee Allen). Ready to take the 2009 Swansea Bay 7’s by storm with their brand of rugby not seen in these parts since the great JPR Williams retired, they will call upon all their experience from the Irn-Bru Scottish Football League Third Division Championship and look to emulate such greats as Dumbarton FC and the legendary Berwick Rangers FC, who at one stage of the season reached the dizzy heights of 8th (out of 100).

Led by their mercurial captain Ceri Parker who was once considered as good as Gareth Edwards… not that Gareth Edwards, but a different one, the Allstars fame and success knows no boundaries. If it's not IRN-BRU, its crap!!!
